MSL Spotlight Series: Meet Laura Feldsteen, MD

1. Tell us about your background and your transition to the pharma/biotech industry?

I am a physician by training. After Medical School I had the opportunity to work in clinical trials as a clinical sub-investigator. This is where I was introduced to Pharma. I was immediately drawn to helping patients in a different way by advancing medicine. I transitioned from patient facing to a Clinical Trial Liaison role where I knew I could help physicians advance care for their patients.

How would you describe your level of experience? I have worked over 11 years with the pharmaceutical industry in some way shape or form .

2. What do you enjoy most about being an MSL?

I love that the field is ever-evolving, and I get to continually learn and grow in my medical knowledge.

3. What is a best practice that changed the way you work as an MSL?

A best practice that changed the way I work is that I am able to understand how the clinical data/evidence relates to real world practice. This is a best practice I implemented early on, and it has helped me when speaking with providers. As a provider myself I understand that this data needs to translate to how it will help patients and how important these discussions are when talking to our external stakeholders so that they can make the most informed decision for their patients.

4. Tell us about a time where you felt like you made an impact as an MSL and how that impact fueled further passion for your work?

As an MSL I have been able to present at various residency programs and that always invigorates me to see how important the work is I am doing. Helping inform and shape the wave of physicians and providers is crucial for them to have the most up to date information when treating patients.

5. Where do you see the role of MSLs evolving in the future, and what trends do you anticipate in healthcare industries?

I see the role evolving to more time being spent on supporting clinical trials. It is important that not just KOLs, but HCPs are aware of new studies that are emerging in their field because it will help shape how they treat their patients, and their patients may be a good candidate for the study.

6. What challenges do you commonly face in your role and how do you overcome them?

One of the most common challenges MSLs face is a lack of access to key stakeholders who are part of an outreach plan. KOLs and thought leaders often have busy schedules, including clinic duties, research responsibilities, and teaching commitments. I’ve learned various strategies to overcome this barrier, including building rapport with office staff, attending conferences and seminars where KOLs are present, and finding common ground in their research interests. Leveraging existing relationships between KOLs and cross-functional teams in a compliant way is another strategy to initiate communication with key stakeholders. Once a meeting is established, it’s important to understand the specific needs and preferences of each KOL to help tailor communication strategies that focus on building long-term, mutually beneficial relationships.

7. How would you describe the culture at Inizio Engage?

I was attracted to join Inizio Engage because it gave me growth opportunities to develop in different therapeutic areas that I did not previously have clinical experience . I find the

culture at Inizio Engage to be all about supporting their employees to find their strengths to help them excel all while maintaining a work/life balance.

What do you like to do in your spare time? I enjoy spending my spare time with family at the beach. I also love travelling and am an avid theme park goer.

8. How do you stay updated on the latest advancements, research, and industry trends in your field?

I think for most MSLs we are lucky to be able to stay abreast of new information by attending conferences, reading peer-reviewed journals and meeting with KOLS. I also learn from every interaction I have in the field as everyone has a different role and experience that helps me broaden my knowledge.
