Mobile vaccination capability improves access to HPV & MMR vaccinations.

3 mins read

The mobile unit and nursing staff have been fully funded by MSD in the UK as a service to medicine.

Using real-time data to enhance efficiencies and patient attendance.

CASE STUDY (UK)

The Challenge

  • It’s estimated that as many as 370,000 young women between 18 and 25 in the UK did not receive their HPV vaccine at school.
  • At 25 UK females lose the right to receive a free HPV vaccine to protect them against preventable HPV related cancers.
  • Our client asked us to partner with the Liverpool Central Primary Care Network and explore ways to increase uptake of vaccinations with 18–25-year-old females.

Our Insights & Strategy

  • Previous projects had given us insights into patient engagement within the community for primary prevention.
  • MMR vaccination levels in the target group in Liverpool was also low.
  • We identified the need for a mobile and roving service to provide quick, easy and safe access at a time and place convenient for patients.

Our Solution

Our role was to:

  • Secure a suitable mobile treatment unit.
  • Recruit and train vaccinators.
  • Develop, approve and action standard operating procedure.
  • Data capture and updating patient records, via electronic records.
  • Follow treatment pathway set out by the NHS.
  • Contractual delivery of service as set out by MSD.
  • Work with NHS to arrange bookings and vaccination attendance confirmation.
  • Dedicated support line for booking appointments.
  • Attend Uni Freshers events to reach target patient group.
  • Engage with the community through primary care & universities.

Our Mid-Project Agility

Responding mid-project to real-time data analysis, we adapted our approach and observed greater vaccination rates within the target cohort:

  • We extended the planned schedule in high engagement areas which was obtained via the data collection process to enhance efficiencies.
  • We introduced a static vaccination unit at university (A) to meet the increased demand which was originally outside of the planned scope of the project.
  • Targeted text invites were sent to patients from GOV.UK with increased uptake of bookings.
  • Closer partnering with the universities to increase uptake with initiatives such as student champions and social media posts.

Vaccination uptake increased by 178% following the change to the planned schedule, text messaging and reallocation of resources.

The Results

  • 6,854 patients identified
  • 8,464 patient calls attempted
  • 1,710 successful patient calls
  • 11 locations
  • 404 vaccinations delivered
