The cruise industry’s first employee induction app

The challenge

Research shows that companies who excel in onboarding improve new-hire retention by up to 82% and overall productivity by around 70%.

Yet many large organisations struggle with complex, paper-heavy induction processes and disconnected first-day experiences for new employees. The challenge was to design a mobile-first onboarding solution that would streamline the process, enhance engagement, and ensure new starters felt connected, productive and part of the culture from day one.

The solution

We built a mobile onboarding app tailored to the needs of a large organisation with 120,000 employees and multiple global locations. Key features included:

  • Mobile-first access: New hires could complete induction tasks, watch welcome content and access key documents through their smartphone at any time.
  • Interactive content and culture-building: The app delivered short videos, role-based checklists and social elements designed to introduce employees to the organisation’s values, teams and workflows.
  • Streamlined admin and onboarding flow: Paperwork, sign-offs and introductions were managed through the app, reducing administrative burden and building a smoother start for new hires.
  • Global scalability and localisation: The platform supported multiple regions and adapted content for different roles and languages to meet a global workforce.

The value created

The mobile onboarding app delivered strong benefits in employee experience, operational efficiency and brand perception.

  • Better retention and engagement: New hires felt more connected and supported from day one, increasing the likelihood they remained with the organisation past the critical early months.
  • Improved productivity: Employees came into their roles with greater clarity, readiness and confidence, helping reduce time-to-competency.
  • Reduced onboarding friction: The streamlined mobile process cut back on paperwork, manual tasks and logistical delays, freeing HR and line managers to focus on human-connections rather than admin.
  • Global reach and consistency: The app enabled a unified onboarding experience across locations, roles and languages, reinforcing the employer brand and culture consistently.

By shifting onboarding from a static process to a mobile-driven, engaging experience the solution helped the organisation welcome its new employees more effectively and set them up for success from day one.
